How responsible is the employer for employees with mental illness? Where do you draw the line between competencies and performance versus poor or unreliable performance due to mental illness? Any suggestions?

A:

Draw the line at behavior. Make no judgments about why people behave or do not behave the correct way. Simply hold them accountable for their behavior. Provide coaching based on their behavior as compared to the stated rules and norms for your practice. NEVER use mental illness as a reason to discipline or coach.
